What is vinyl trifluoride?


Chlorotrifluoroethylene (abbreviated PCTFE) is a polymer compound formed by the polymerisation of vinyl trifluoride. The low molecular weight is a liquid or wax. High molecular weights are white solids or dispersions. Solid density 2.1 to 2.2. Melting point 208 to 210°C. Resistant to heat, acids, alkalis and organic solvents (except halides), but not to molten caustic soda and elemental fluorine.


Soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and tetrachlorinated compounds. Second only to Teflon in chemical resistance. Can be used as an engineering plastic. Tensile strength is 3.096~4.135mpa (316~422kgf/cm2). Generally used in chemical equipment, insulated cables, radios, capacitors and accessories with high performance requirements for heat or low temperature resistance. The dispersion is used in the preparation of anti-corrosion coatings and films.

Teflon is synthesized by propriety polymerization, solution polymerization and dispersion polymerization, which are prepared by free radical polymerization using peroxides as initiators.

Polytetrafluoroethylene has excellent chemical stability, insulating properties and weather resistance. It can be used for a long time at -196 to 125°C. Its mechanical strength and hardness are better than PTFE. The film has a good transparency and low permeability.

It is suitable for contact with strongly corrosive media, sealing and gasket materials for high pressure systems, transparent materials for viewing windows, electrical insulation materials, etc. Therefore, it has special significance in the chemical and atomic energy industries, but it is more expensive than PTFE. Low molecular weight vinyl trifluoride has a high density, excellent viscous temperature characteristics and chemical resistance. It can be used as a sealing fluid, grease and balancing fluid for navigation gyroscopes in strongly corrosive media.

PCTFE has excellent rigidity, low temperature resistance and cold flow resistance. It is an ideal sealing material at low temperatures and high pressures. It has special applications in high-tech fields.


1. contact with strong corrosive media, sealing gasket materials for high pressure systems, transparent materials for observation windows, etc.

2. Electrical insulation materials, etc.

3. Low molecular weight PCTFE is used as sealing fluid, grease and balancing fluid for navigation gyroscopes in highly corrosive media.

The molecular weight of vinyl trifluoride is relatively complex. When the fluorine atom is in the molecular structure, the polymer is chemically inert, somewhat temperature resistant, non-hygroscopic and breathable. The presence of the chlorine atom in the molecular structure is a polymer with good processing fluidity, transparency and hardness. Due to the introduction of the C-Cl bond in the molecular structure of PCTFE, it has better hardness, rigidity and creep resistance, better permeability and a relatively low melting point and melt viscosity, in addition to being slightly less heat resistant and chemically inert than polytetrafluoroethylene and tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymers.

In summary, vinyl trifluoride itself belongs to a compound which is made as a result of a polymerisation reaction, and since its own stability is not high enough, it is important to pay attention to safety when using this compound.
